Katarina began skating when she was five years old. She was able to prove her skill and was accepted into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted children. There she had a conversation with the trainer Jutta M ller. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she finished second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured everybody's eye at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the game. Olympic Success at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating in a highly competitive contest. A more competitive contest four years later, Witt won the medal. The free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short program. Witt became the very first time a repeat medalist in figure skating for women after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in film as an actor, returned to figure skating in 1994 to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win the medal. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
